In the Zhou family mansion, the head of the family Zhou Puyuan (played by Sun Daolin) runs a coal mining business and has a second son, Zhou Chong (played by Zhong Hao), with his new wife Fan Yi (played by Gu Yongfei). The mother of his first son, Zhou Ping (played by Ma Xiaowei), is said by Zhou Puyuan to have passed away long ago. The young and beautiful Fan Yi cannot endure the dull atmosphere of the Zhou family mansion and Zhou Puyuan's gloomy temper, leading her to develop an incestuous relationship with her eldest son Zhou Ping. This forbidden love ultimately ends in tragedy due to Zhou Ping's cowardice, as he shifts his attention to the family's maid Si Feng (played by Zhang Yu). The relationship between Zhou Ping and Si Feng leaves Fan Yi in a state of mental distress, prompting her to summon Si Feng's mother in hopes of having Si Feng dismissed. Entering the Zhou mansion is Shi Ping (played by Qin Yi), who turns out to be Zhou Ping's biological mother, abandoned by Zhou Puyuan thirty years ago and later rescued by the family's steward Lu Gui. Unable to accept the fact that her daughter and son are in love without knowing their connection, Shi Ping is faced with an unavoidable tragedy... This film is adapted from the playwright Cao Yu's play of the same name, which has been repeatedly adapted for the screen and remains active on the stage to this day.
