Old Red Army member Lu Chun (played by Zhao Dan) returns to his hometown after many years, preparing to establish a lumber yard. His idea receives support from his old comrade Zhan Guocai (played by Gao Bo) and the daughter of a martyr, Shan Que (played by Zhu Xijuan). Soon, a group of Shanghai educated youth arrives at the forest farm. Lu Chun considers that since they are new, in order to retain them, they must fall in love with the forest area. He meticulously cares for their lives and appoints Shan Que as their group leader. As time passes, the youth's thoughts change; some can settle down to work, while others look down on manual labor, believing that logging is a misallocation of their talents as educated youth.
