In 1920s China, rural woman Zhou Lian (played by Yu Lan) marries normal school student Jiang Meiqing (played by Sun Daolin). At this time, China is on the eve of a great revolutionary storm. Newlywed, the couple shares a deep bond, but gradually Zhou Lian begins to misunderstand her husband's actions; she does not know that he is a Communist among the Northern Expedition Army. After the failure of the revolution, her husband is brutally murdered by reactionaries. This experience makes Zhou Lian fully aware of the brutality of class struggle, and she resolves to continue her husband's unfinished cause.
