In the 1920s, the conflict between Britain and Ireland deepened, ultimately leading to the outbreak of the Irish War of Independence. A promising medical student, Damien (played by Cillian Murphy), learns of the war and resolutely decides to join the fight. He returns to his hometown and, along with his brother Teddy (Padraic Delaney) and friend Dan (Liam Cunningham), joins the Irish Republican Army. This group of young men, fueled by passion and brilliant tactics, repeatedly defeats the "Black and Tans," the militia hired by the British government. Their resistance forces the British Army to agree to sign a treaty; however, this becomes a turning point where former comrades part ways... The film won the Palme d'Or at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, the Best Cinematography at the 2006 European Film Awards, the Audience Award for Best Irish Film at the 2007 Irish Film and Television Awards, as well as awards for Best Supporting Actor (Liam Cunningham) and Best Film.
