Young Malik (played by Tahar Rahim) is sentenced to six years in prison for participating in criminal activities. In prison, he soon catches the attention of Corsican gang leader Luciani (played by Niels Arestrup) due to his half-Arab heritage. Luciani coerces Malik into assassinating an Arab inmate. Malik completes the task and gains the protection of Luciani's gang during his prison term. A year later, when some Corsican inmates are transferred, Luciani's power diminishes, and Malik, who learns Corsican, becomes his eyes and ears. Meanwhile, Malik continues his studies in the prison school. Soon, he gets a chance to work outside during the day, and leveraging his connections gained in prison, Malik ventures into the marijuana trade, earning substantial profits, and gradually breaks free from Luciani's control to establish his own path... This film won the Jury Prize at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival.
