Middle-aged woman Bessie (played by Diane Keaton) has spent most of her life caring for two elderly relatives: her stroke-afflicted father Marvin and her eccentric aunt Ruth. Now, Bessie herself is suffering from leukemia, and her only hope for survival is for a close relative to donate bone marrow. Reluctantly, Bessie reaches out to her sister Lee (played by Meryl Streep), with whom she has had no contact for 20 years. Lee is a single mother who does not want to meet Bessie, but thinking of the temporary relief from the trouble caused by her son Hank (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) setting fires at home, she decides to take her son back to their old home in Florida. When the sisters first meet, their emotions are somewhat positive, but as time goes on, past grievances start to resurface. Furthermore, Hank, who has spent time in a mental institution, is unwilling to undergo the bone marrow test, hurting Bessie's feelings. Eventually, Hank's relationship with Bessie miraculously improves, helping to restore the bond between the two sisters...
