Luke leads a scam group operating in Joliet, near Chicago. One day, one of his underlings delivers a large sum of money that has just been scammed. Soon after, Luke is murdered. It turns out that this money was the gambling winnings recently collected by the Chicago mob boss, Lonigan (Robert Shaw), and it is this money that brings Luke to his demise. Hook (Robert Redford) is one of Luke's underlings, whom Luke treats like his own son and had intended to introduce to his friend, the master con artist Gondorff (Paul Newman) in Chicago. Hook vows to avenge Luke, so he heads to Chicago to find Gondorff. Hook successfully finds Gondorff, and upon hearing that the enemy is Lonigan, Gondorff immediately gets to work. Thus, a flawless con plan begins!
