A work by Mikio Naruse reflecting rural family ethics. Yae (played by Chikage Awashima), who has been a widow in the countryside for many years, along with her brother, is busy handling the work and marriage affairs of the next generation. However, the young people each have their own ideas, longing for modern life and unwilling to continue to guard the ancestral fields. They are also hesitant about the marriages arranged by their parents, which exhausts the elders. Yae carefully takes care of her nephews and nieces alongside a married journalist, properly resolving the conflicts between the two generations. In the process, the two develop feelings for each other, subtly cherishing a romance that transcends friendship. In the end, Yae calmly restrains her feelings after the other person chooses to escape, while her brother, though disapproving of the younger generation's choices, is helpless and can only lament the ruthless changes of the times after selling the fields he has worked for many years.
