The story takes place in a hotel located in Bournemouth, England, where some rooms are rented on a long-term basis, resulting in a gathering of the hotel’s "regulars." Sybil (Deborah Kerr) is an old maid with a quirky personality, living under the control of her possessive mother, Mrs. Maude. In reality, Sybil secretly loves a man named David (David Niven), but her shyness leads her to bury these feelings deep inside. One day, a mysterious woman named Ann (Rita Hayworth) checks into the hotel, and Pat (Wendy Hiller) is surprised to find that this isn’t her first encounter with Ann; they share a past that is complicated yet unspeakable.
