The outstanding yet abrasive football coach White (Kevin Costner) is expelled from his high school due to a violent incident, which also closes the door to employment at other high schools. In a desperate situation, White arrives at the poor, remote town of McFarland in California to work at the local high school. The town's residents, many of whom are immigrants from Mexico, are impoverished and rough, starkly different from kids in big cities. Trying to temper his short temper, White only wants to return to the city as soon as possible to improve the lives of his wife and daughters. During this time, he discovers the long-distance running talents of a group of Mexican boys. To that end, he goes to great lengths to persuade the principal, students, and their parents to form the school's first cross-country team. His original intention may have just been a stepping stone, but he never expected it to change his life and the lives of the kids... This film is based on a true story that took place in 1987.
