The outstanding yet abrasive football coach White (Kevin Costner) is expelled from his high school due to a violent incident, which also closes the door to employment at other high schools. In a desperate situation, White arrives at the poor, remote town of McFarland in California to work at the local high school. The town's residents, many of whom are immigrants from Mexico, are impoverished and rough, starkly different from kids in big cities. Trying to temper his short temper, White only wants to return to the city as soon as possible to improve the lives of his wife and daughters.
