In March 1947, the Kuomintang's Hu Zongnan's bandit group invaded Yan'an with the strength of 15 brigades. Chiang Kai-shek arrogantly declared that he would capture Yan'an within three days, hoping to exchange this for U.S. dollars from his master, American imperialism. The enemy's 31st Brigade was the vanguard brigade, and they had begun their furious assault on Yan'an. In order to better buy time, concentrate forces, and eliminate the enemy, one of our brigades was tasked with defending Yan'an and blocking the enemy. The brigade headquarters analyzed the enemy situation and determined that if the enemy wanted to attack Yan'an, they would have to pass through the strategic point of Songshuling. Therefore, the brigade headquarters assigned the task of holding Songshuling to the Second Company, which was directly commanded by the brigade headquarters. The company commander was killed, so the brigade commander sent Su Qiang to lead the Second Company, instructing them to hold the area from Hill 92 to Songshuling for seven days. When the enemy nearly occupied the position, Su Qiang and communications soldier Liu Xiaolin arrived, and he immediately joined the battle to command, ultimately repelling the enemy's attack. Upon arriving at the position, Su Qiang discovered that there was a sense of complacency among the Second Company soldiers and promptly helped them correct this mindset while organizing the soldiers to repair the fortifications, repelling dozens of enemy assaults. At this time, the right flank of Hill 92 was occupied by the enemy, and the defense of Hill 92 had lost its significance, so the brigade headquarters ordered the Second Company to withdraw to Songshuling and hold the positions in this area. The soldiers did not understand the command for a voluntary withdrawal and disagreed with the retreat. However, under Su Qiang's persuasion, they executed the superior's orders. Intense fighting broke out at Songshuling, and after several days of combat, the enemy was still unable to make any progress toward Yan'an. At this moment, the cunning enemy brigade commander organized a feigned frontal attack while attempting to encircle the Second Company through a circuitous route. Su Qiang and others discovered the enemy's trick and devised a counter-strategy, successfully repelling the enemy with the support of guerrilla forces. The enemy became even more frenzied, ordering their entire brigade to bombard Songshuling, and the battle was extremely fierce... After six days and nights of fighting, the Second Company was surrounded. To buy time and hold back the enemy, resolutely completing the task of holding for seven days and seven nights at Songshuling, the soldiers, under Su Qiang's command, exhibited tenacious will and brave fighting spirit, ultimately repelling the enemy and reclaiming the nearly lost positions at Songshuling. During the seven days and nights that the Second Company resisted the enemy, our army followed Chairman Mao's directive to maximize the destruction of the enemy, not focusing on the gains and losses of a single city or location, and actively abandoned Yan'an. Meanwhile, our main forces began to concentrate along the Jinpenwan line. At this point, the preparations for the Qinghuabian campaign had already been completed. Under Su Qiang's command and the cooperation of brother units, the soldiers of the Second Company completed their mission of blocking the enemy and received praise from Chairman Mao, earning the title of Heroic Company. The brigade headquarters ordered the Heroic Company to withdraw from Songshuling, but the soldiers still did not understand the significance of the retreat and felt some resistance in their thoughts. However, when they retreated to Qinghuabian and saw the large forces, three to four times the number of the enemy, spread across the mountains, they finally understood the strategic significance of retreating and resisting for seven days and nights at Songshuling. After the enemy arrogantly entered Yan'an, they were determined to find our main forces for a decisive battle, only to fall into our trap of luring the enemy deeper. The enemy’s vanguard, the 31st Brigade, was led into the bag-shaped position set up at Qinghuabian. When the enemy troops entered our ambush zone, the Qinghuabian battle commenced. The so-called undefeated 31st Brigade was completely annihilated. Our army victoriously concluded the great Qinghuabian battle.
