Set against the backdrop of World War I, the film tells the story of three French prisoners escaping from a German concentration camp. The three French pilots, Bodio, Mike, and Rosenthal, are shot down by the German army during a mission and taken to a POW camp. Bodio and the German camp commandant, Rofenstein, both come from noble backgrounds and share similar political views, leading them to become friends in prison. The three soon discover that fellow inmates are planning an escape and have dug a tunnel. Mike and Rosenthal also join in the excavation effort. Eventually, they all escape together, prompting a full-scale manhunt by the Germans. During the flight, Bodio is brought down by Rofenstein, while Mike and Rosenthal manage to escape to the house of a German farmer. With her help, they navigate various challenges and flee to Switzerland. The film is one of the earliest escape films and is regarded as one of the greatest "escape movies," as well as a pacifist masterpiece by director Jean Renoir.
