This film is adapted from a play of the same name. During the Liberation War, young students fought against the Kuomintang reactionaries under the leadership of the Communist Party. University student Fang Zheren focused solely on his studies and avoided politics. To undermine the student movement, Kuomintang spies Chen Xueping and Jiang Zhengqing secretly courted Fang Zheren. To confuse Fang, they disguised themselves as members of the Youth Army and injured Fang's cousin Song Beihua, who was involved in student propaganda work. As a result, Fang misjudged the Youth Army and had disagreements with Song. The underground party leader He Mai timely educated Fang Zheren, awakening his consciousness. When reactionary officers came to arrest He Mai, Fang Zheren stepped forward and, along with his classmates, protected He Mai. During the "May 20" student movement, Fang Zheren was unfortunately arrested and imprisoned. In prison, he endured brutal torture at the hands of the enemy, facing threats and temptations, but he remained resolute, unafraid of intimidation, and vowed never to surrender to the enemy. After liberation, he was rescued from prison. With the founding of New China, Fang Zheren and the young students took on the task of building the new country. Through their actions, they composed a symphony called "Democratic Youth March."
