During World War II, the Japanese Army occupied a prisoner-of-war camp on the border of Myanmar. For strategic reasons, the Japanese planned to build a bridge at the border of Myanmar and Thailand, hoping to force the prisoners in the camp to contribute to the construction. However, Colonel Nicholson (played by Alec Guinness), the British POW representative, refused to comply, believing it violated the Geneva Convention. As a result, Nicholson and others were put in confinement. Without Nicholson's leadership, the prisoners became apathetic, and due to inadequacies in Japanese design, the construction work stalled. The Japanese Army had no choice but to release Nicholson and others. After being freed, Nicholson felt that instead of destroying everything in the war, why not do something constructive, so he began to engage in the bridge-building work. Meanwhile, the escaped American POW Shears (played by William Holden) accepted a special mission from the Allies to blow up the bridge on the day it was completed.
