This film is based on true events. On December 13, 1937, invading Japanese troops captured Nanjing and conducted inhumane massacres. To protect the lives of refugees and Chinese soldiers, the monks of Xixia Temple, led by Master Jiran, spontaneously organized to establish a Buddhist refugee shelter, providing aid and resettlement for over 24,000 refugees. In the struggle against the Japanese army, many monks tragically lost their lives to the enemy's gunfire. Master Jiran and others, undeterred by sacrifice, assisted injured and ill refugees while finding ways to protect anti-Japanese soldiers, helping them cross the river safely, and risking their lives to smuggle out films documenting the Japanese atrocities in the Nanjing Massacre. In their fight against the Japanese army, unarmed Chinese monks faced death without fear, wielding the Buddhist doctrines of compassion and universal salvation as their weapons. They engaged in direct confrontation, writing open letters to expose the Japanese military's brutalities in a struggle between humanity and brutality. Ultimately, justice triumphed over evil, preserving the ancient temple and ensuring the safety of over 24,000 refugees. The film promotes the great spirit of humanitarianism and patriotism and showcases the noble patriotic sentiments of Buddhist monks, revealing a little-known story.
