In 1992, years of tribal warfare devastated the East African country of Somalia, leaving the people struggling to survive, which led to a famine causing the deaths of over 300,000 individuals. The dictator Mohamed Farah Aidid, who controlled the capital Mogadishu, stole humanitarian aid intended for Somalia from international organizations, provoking global outrage. The deranged Aidid declared war on international peacekeeping forces, prompting the United States to send 160 special forces members to Mogadishu to overthrow Aidid's regime. This group of passionate soldiers was full of confidence, but their lack of intelligence gathering resulted in a stalemate in the conflict. During an operation to capture two high-ranking officials of Aidid's regime, the special forces faced fierce resistance from Somali militias. A violent standoff occurred in the city center, during which a U.S. Black Hawk helicopter was shot down and crashed into urban areas, putting the crew's lives at risk.
