The British Navy's HMS Devonshire was sunk by an unidentified torpedo attack within Chinese territorial waters. To investigate the situation, the British Navy decided to use military force and sent a warship to retaliate in the area of the incident. However, this was blocked by the head of Secret Intelligence, M (Judi Dench), who dispatched agent 007, James Bond (Pierce Brosnan), to uncover the true cause and prevent an imminent war between the two countries. During the ongoing investigation, media mogul Carver (Jonathan Pryce) came into Bond's sights. At a dinner hosted by Carver, Bond encountered his former girlfriend Paris (Teri Hatcher), now Mrs. Carver. With Paris's help, Bond used GPS to redirect the deployed British warship, buying precious time for his investigation. From equipment stolen from Carver, Bond discovered the exact location of the sunken warship, but at the wreck site, he was captured along with Chinese agent Lin Lei (Michelle Yeoh) by Carver. It turns out that Carver intended to provoke war to gain a monopoly over global media. This time, can Bond escape from the clutches and thwart Carver's conspiracy?
