In 1940, Kobe, Japan, with the clouds of war gathering, the Pacific War was on the verge of breaking out. However, Tomoko Fukuhara (played by Yu Aoi), living a life of luxury and indulgence, seemed unaffected by external circumstances. She and her businessman husband, Yusaku Fukuhara (played by Issei Takahashi), led a stylish and affluent life, with Tomoko appearing as the leading actress in the movies directed by Yusaku. It was a carefree existence that evoked envy. But everything seemed to change after Yusaku and his nephew, Fumio, returned from filming in the puppet state of Manchukuo. Yusaku became taciturn and contemplative. Tomoko’s childhood friend, the military-clad Taiji (played by Masahiro Higashide), became gloomy and aggressive. Hidden secrets gradually began to surface, and Tomoko was shocked to discover that Yusaku had filmed something terrifying in Manchukuo, while Yusaku seemed to be making a decision that threatened all of Japan. What path should this innocent woman choose... This film was originally a series produced by NHK and the re-edited film version won the Silver Lion for Best Director at the 2020 Venice Film Festival.
