In the 1940s, former boxing champion Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) is the most powerful mob boss in Los Angeles. He manages prostitution, gambling, and other activities while bribing the LAPD and judges, committing crimes and dominating the area. LAPD officer John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) has always despised evil and never feared Mickey, recently having disrupted one of his brothels. This time, Los Angeles Sheriff Bill Parker decides to initiate a showdown with Mickey and instructs John to organize a secret team aimed at taking him down. On his wife's suggestion, John enlists his friend Jerry (Ryan Gosling) from the police department, who is also the boyfriend of Mickey's mistress Grace (Emma Stone); sharpshooter Max Kennard; the equally justice-seeking black officer Coleman Harris; former intelligence agent Conwell Keeler; and Max’s apprentice, Mexican Navidad Ramirez, to form the Gangster Squad.
