Experienced thief Nick (Robert De Niro) successfully completes a task for his client and returns home, but during the handover, the client Max (Marlon Brando) brings him one good and one bad piece of news: the bad news is that the buyer has died, and Nick can't deliver; the good news is that there's a big deal of four million waiting for him—he needs to steal the King's scepter from the basement of the customs building. Nick, who is preparing to marry his girlfriend, doesn't want to return to stealing, but Max's partner—Jack (Edward Norton), a young man posing as mentally challenged to infiltrate customs—insists on the job.
