The loan shark Bart (played by Bob Hoskins) took Danny (played by Jet Li) in when he was four years old, training him like a wild beast to become his loyal "wolf dog." Bart's daily job involves leading his underlings with Danny to collect debts; anyone who dares to resist violently faces the release of the collar around Danny's neck—this is the signal for him to attack with brutal ferocity. After each mission, Danny is returned to a dark underground cage. In one fight, Danny encounters the blind pianist Sam (played by Morgan Freeman) and becomes so captivated by the piano that he forgets Bart's orders. An enraged Bart sends Danny to an underground boxing ring where death is the outcome, profiting even more. On their way out, Bart and his crew are ambushed by enemies, while Danny escapes and is taken in by Sam's family. In Sam's home, Danny experiences the missing warmth of familial love, gradually reclaiming his humanity and begins to learn the piano. After treatment, Bart and his crew recover and pull Danny back into the boxing ring, but Danny is no longer willing to kill. He inadvertently discovers the truth about his mother's murder, and a final showdown with Bart's gang becomes inevitable...
