During the Gulf War, tank officer Sherlin (played by Denzel Washington) mistakenly ordered the destruction of his own troops' tanks, resulting in the accidental death of his friend Baldwin. Although a military court found him not responsible, he suffers a constant torment of conscience and longs to explain the situation to Baldwin's parents, but he lacks the courage. To honor Sherlin, his superior assigns him to investigate an incident in which a mechanic heroically sacrificed himself to save soldiers during the war. In his investigation, Sherlin discovers that the brave soldier who perished was actually a woman named Karen (played by Meg Ryan)! However, the testimonies from several soldiers at the scene contradict each other and are full of holes. After Sherlin interrogates one of the soldiers, Murphy, he unexpectedly commits suicide. With Murphy's death, the truth of the incident gradually comes to light...
