32-year-old Lauren Curran (Christina Ricci) and her husband Russell (Brendan Fletcher) move into a high-tech new apartment. Recently traumatized by the loss of their child and suffering from bipolar disorder, Lauren is pleased with the apartment's security monitoring system, but soon realizes something is off in the building. She suspects the owner of the hotel is secretly manipulating the residents, while her husband believes these are just her imaginations. Lauren begins to investigate the company that built the apartment on her own and hires a helper – conspiracy theorist Vonn Shasfield (John Cusack). Vonn believes the apartment is a testing ground, with the tenants being unwitting subjects in a massive brainwashing conspiracy.
