People living at the bottom of the metropolis endure meager wages, working hard to make ends meet, with some having no place to sleep at all. Stuart is a striking example of this. After being released from prison, he moved from Glasgow in the north to London in search of work and ended up finding a temporary job on a construction site. Rab is a domineering guy, and the workers must obediently follow orders. Stuart feels that making a living in London is very difficult. One day, on his way to work, he finds a handbag, which leads him to meet Susan, who dreams of becoming a singer, but in reality, she is an unemployed failure struggling with medication.
