Hubert is a teenage boy whose father is considered a traitor for refusing to return to the country after being stranded in the West. To protect him, his mother painfully sends him to live with his aunt in Warsaw. During the oppressive rule of the Polish Communist Party, this noble, enigmatic, yet rebellious aunt runs an equestrian club. She not only forbids the boy from calling her aunt, but also creates a politically correct backstory for him to smoothly integrate into the local school. Growing up with his mother's strict emphasis on integrity and honesty, Hubert discovers a different world through his aunt. The boy gradually moves from confusion to uncovering his aunt's secrets, ultimately coming to understand some unimaginable truths, which alters his perception of truth. "Running Through Time" (Cwal/ At Full Gallop, 1996) is another commendable work by Zanussi. Perhaps due to the political changes or the creator's own aging, this retrospective of the oppressive rule of the Polish Communist Party in the 1950s is not as solemn as one might expect; instead, it conveys warmth and childlike emotions. Zanussi even makes a cameo at the end of the film, humorously acknowledging that some of the storylines are drawn from his own experiences, and he takes a bow with the actors.
