Before the National Revolutionary Army's Northern Expedition, the warlord-ruled regions were lawless; corrupt officials bullied the people, and local rascals harassed the villagers. The actions of petty people were despicable, and their faces were laughable. Liu San Mazi in the film represents such a petty person. Liu San rises from an informant to a public security officer and then to a squad leader, acting recklessly and exhibiting numerous embarrassing behaviors, making one laugh like Dongshi imitating the frown. Today's society values freedom and law in stark contrast to the past; figures like Liu San cannot be tolerated. Therefore, this film employs a comedic approach to amuse the audience.
