On a winter night, lawyer Michelle (played by Ian Holm) receives a call from his drug-addicted daughter Zoe while washing his car at a car wash, revealing their ideological conflicts. Frustrated, Michelle faces the embarrassment of a car door that won't open and ultimately storms away, abandoning the vehicle. Earlier, on a plane, Michelle encountered his daughter's former friend Allison and shared the reasons behind the rift between him and his daughter... Michelle witnesses a car accident in a small town, where a school bus carrying school-aged children flips into a lake while trying to avoid an oncoming vehicle, resulting in many families losing their loved ones. During his visits, Michelle encounters a variety of families with dysfunctional relationships, domestic violence, and chronic illnesses. In an effort to help them seek compensation from the government, the lawyer embarks on a difficult journey of altruism... The film won the Jury Prize at the 50th Cannes Film Festival.
