Tommaso (played by Riccardo Scamarcio) is born into a family of pasta makers, and it’s clear that the heavy responsibility of inheriting the family business will soon fall on him and his brother, Antonio (played by Alessandro Preziosi). However, Tommaso, whose ambitions lie elsewhere, longs to become a writer and has kept his sexual orientation a secret from his family, as he is a homosexual. During a family gathering, Tommaso comes up with a brilliant idea to confess his sexual orientation to his father. This way, his conservative father would surely throw him out of the house, allowing him the freedom to pursue his literary dreams. Tommaso shares this idea with Antonio, but unexpectedly, Antonio beats him to the punch by "coming out" in front of the family. This unexpected news causes their father to have a heart attack, forcing Tommaso to temporarily put his plans on hold.
