HBO's historical miniseries John Adams, adapted from the life of America's second president John Adams and the early history of the United States, stars Paul Giamatti and features a strong cast. Due to John Adams' tenure coinciding with the Revolutionary War, many British actors also joined the project, and numerous costumes and props were supported by the BBC, making it a monumental production aimed at the grandeur of Rome. John Adams was a member of the drafting committee for the Declaration of Independence formed by Thomas Jefferson, the first Vice President of the United States, and later served as President (1797-1801). He was hailed as the "Colossus of Independence." Due to his short and stocky physique, he was nicknamed "Mr. Round." During his presidency, he did not achieve significant accomplishments in domestic or foreign policy and was defeated by Thomas Jefferson in the 1800 presidential election. Both he and Jefferson died on the fiftieth anniversary of American independence—July 4, 1826. His son John Quincy Adams was the sixth president of the United States. HBO's seven-episode John Adams is adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning bestseller of the same name, which is also one of the most popular biographical literatures in American history. The series depicts the extraordinary life of John Adams (from the perspective of Americans), particularly his contributions to the founding principles and social foundations of the United States. The basic political ideals of "freedom," "democracy," and "human rights" that America upholds all originated during John Adams' presidency. Additionally, the series focuses on the love story between John Adams and his wife Abigail. Abigail was not only John Adams' lover but also his steadfast political ally and the backbone of the Adams family; their love has been considered by Americans as "one of the most touching love stories in American history." The series stars Oscar-winning actors Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney, directed by acclaimed director Tom Hooper, with Tom Hanks serving as executive producer. Screenwriter Kirk Ellis has experience in adapting historical themes, having previously written for Into the West.
