In a highly advanced technological future, the decadent city of Marduk is a place of indulgence and excess. The beautiful girl Lune Barlot (voiced by Megumi Hayashibara), who is adored and spoiled, receives everything from the casino operator Schal (voiced by Kazuhiko Inoue) but cannot suppress her desire to discover her true identity. Her thoughts seem to anger the tyrannical Schal, leading to life-threatening consequences. In her moment of crisis, Barlot is rescued by the crime investigation officer Dr. Uvquk (voiced by Tomohito Yashima), who, under the protection and permission of the Emergency Directive 09 in Marduk, grants her a special ability prohibited by the directive. Uvquk hopes to expose Schal's string of crimes with the girl's help. For her, this marks the beginning of a perilous journey… This film is based on the science fiction novel by Shirow Masamune and is the first installment in the "Ghost in the Shell" trilogy (the other two parts are "Burning" and "Exhaust").
