On November 11th, the 49th year of Kangxi's reign, Kangxi led the crown prince and Prince Yong in hunting at the Mulan Hunting Ground. Prince Yong unexpectedly met Li Jiashi, who later gave birth to his fourth son, Hongli, at the Mulan Hunting Ground. In the 59th year of Kangxi's reign, during a hunting expedition, Kangxi was in danger and was saved by the young Hongli, who cleverly answered a couplet, winning Kangxi's favor. After ascending the throne, Hongli changed the era name to Qianlong. During his reign, he established the Siku Quanshu (Complete Library of the Four Treasuries) and compiled the Siku Quanshu. When Ji Xiaolan, the chief editor of the Siku Quanshu, was caught without clothes in his study due to the heat while working when Qianlong arrived, he had to hide under the table but was still called out by Qianlong. Fortunately, he cleverly interpreted "old man" and Qianlong allowed him to work without clothing. Liu Yong went to meet Qianlong, contending for the title of "Hunchback," which would grant him an additional 20,000 taels in annual salary. Qianlong, reluctant, secretly tasked someone to pose tricky questions, which Liu Yong answered one by one. Finally, Qianlong had Liu Yong jump into an ice hole; after receiving the order, Liu Yong stood by the ice hole for a long time and later met Qianlong, claiming he met Qu Yuan and asking if Qianlong was a tyrant who forced his ministers to death. Qianlong had no choice but to let him go. In the 16th year of Qianlong's reign, he accompanied the Empress Dowager on a southern tour to Yangzhou. To understand the people's feelings, Qianlong disguised himself as a merchant, leaving behind a single guard to go out in plain clothes. At the famous Yile Garden teahouse in Yangzhou, known for serving meat tea, he encountered a teahouse that only sold water. With the assistance of the chatty waiter, he learned that teahouses in Yangzhou served various snacks and liquor but didn't sell any tea. Qianlong had to go across the street to buy tea leaves. While the waiter passionately introduced the saying "As people in Yangzhou grow old, boats from Guazhou become small," explaining that people in Yangzhou politely refer to him as "the old master," while in Guangzhou, people refer to everyone as "old man," Qianlong was taken on a delightful lesson in local customs. While tasting delicious food, he noticed a young man named Zhou Riqing, who was holding "Spring and Autumn" at a vegetable stall. The waiter informed him that Zhou's uncle was an Academician at the Hanlin Academy but was honest in governance, and after retirement, lived in poverty and sickness, only allowing Zhou Riqing to sell vegetables to make ends meet. Just then, two officials arrived to demand a donation but Zhou Riqing couldn't produce the money. From the waiter's words, it turned out that Ye Hongyun had falsely claimed an imperial decree in Yangzhou to establish a neighborhood donation office, requiring all businesses to contribute money. As they were speaking, the two officials downstairs began to beat Zhou Riqing when they couldn't collect money. Forced to defend himself, Zhou Riqing fought back, while Qianlong cheered him on, leading to an attack on Qianlong by many officials drinking tea in the teahouse. After the two managed to defeat the numerous officials, they wanted to go for tea only to discover that the previously bustling place was now deserted, with merchants and common folks closing their doors and windows tightly in fear. Helpless, Qianlong had to sit in the middle of the street to rest. At this moment, Ye Hongyun led the officials to arrest Qianlong, but was intimidated by Qianlong’s presence. Following this, the retinue led by E Rong'an confirmed Qianlong's identity. The waiter, who had previously scolded Qianlong during their conversation, realizing the polite guest was actually Qianlong, could only resort to hanging himself, but was saved at the critical moment by Qianlong’s orders. Afterwards, Zhou Riqing was promoted to lead Qianlong's horse. The waiter was also appointed as an official. The corrupt officials like Ye Hongyun were punished.
