After the Anglo-French forces burned the Summer Palace, they forced the weak and foolish Qing government to sign a series of unequal treaties. Their arrogance in China was overwhelming, while the timid and fearful Qing Emperor Xianfeng (played by Leung Ka-fai) hid inside the Rehe Palace. Besides the Empress (Chen Ye), the consorts often seen around Xianfeng included Concubine Li (Zhou Jie) and the favored Concubine Yi (Liu Xiaoqing). Concubine Yi tried very hard to please Xianfeng, but Concubine Li was clearly more favored by him. On the thirtieth birthday, Xianfeng suddenly fell seriously ill. In his final moments, the ambitious minister Suqing (Xiang Kun) noticed Concubine Yi's cunning nature and privately suggested killing her to establish a young ruler.
