Bei Shaolin's monk Zhiming (played by Jet Li) practices martial arts daily to avenge his parents' deaths. With his inherently kind and clever nature, he earns great favor from his master. One day, a group of mischievous "disciples" he has taken in inform him that the long-retired Prince Hesso has resurfaced to take power. Upon hearing this news about his father's killer, Zhiming is filled with rage and decides to descend the mountain to assassinate Hesso during his birthday celebrations. Meanwhile, Sima Yan (played by Huang Qiuyan), a lay disciple from Nan Shaolin who also has a deep-seated vendetta against Hesso, heads north to kill him as well. The Nan Shaolin sends another lay disciple, Zhao Wei (played by Hu Jianqiang), to secretly support and protect Sima Yan. At Hesso's birthday celebration, Zhiming, Sima Yan, and Zhao Wei attempt to carry out the assassination but ultimately fail and escape amid heavy encirclement. During their flight, Zhiming discovers that Sima Yan is actually his betrothed fiancé, but as a monk, he cannot marry her. The three plan another attempt to assassinate Hesso…
