Director Hu Jinquan won an award at the Cannes Film Festival and was selected as one of the world's top five directors by the British "International Film Guide" in 1978. This anti-Japanese war film is Hu's first work as a writer, director, and actor, created in 1964. It won Best Screenplay, Best Editing (Jiang Xinglong), and a Special Award for Promoting National Spirit at the 1966 Golden Horse Awards, being praised for its "depiction of the patriotic fervor of Chinese sons and daughters, lively portrayal, and profound content." The story describes the efforts of the Chinese people to resist Japan during World War II; aside from Hu's performance, the main cast includes Lotte, Chen Hou, Xia Yiqiu, and Chen Yanyan.
