During the Qing Dynasty, patriots in Guangzhou actively contacted the lineage of Zheng Chenggong from Taiwan in order to expel foreign rulers. General Duan and Master He, among others, were suppressed by the Guangzhou general Tian Da while trying to rescue their anti-Qing comrades. Master He's student, Liu Yude (played by Liu Jia Hui), actively participated in anti-Qing activities, and his family fell victim to the hands of Tian Da's underling, Tang Sanyao. Liu Yude managed to escape alone and endured hardships to reach Shaolin Temple, hoping to learn Shaolin martial arts to help the suffering common people and avenge his family. At that time, Shaolin Temple had thirty-five chambers, where thirty-four were dedicated to training physical strength or martial arts with weapons. Liu Yude, whose Dharma name was San De, displayed extraordinary talent and, after five years of hard study, became proficient in the thirty-four chambers. Upon completing his training, Liu Yude proposed to the abbot the establishment of the 36th Chamber of Shaolin, aimed at accepting lay disciples and spreading Shaolin martial arts. After seven years away from home, Liu Yude returned to Guangzhou, accepted youth such as Hong Xiguan and Lu A'cai as disciples, and engaged in fierce battles with the Qing court's underlings... This film won the Best Action Effects Award at the 1978 Asian Film Festival.
