In order to write, philosophy teacher Marion (Gena Rowlands) rented a studio. One day, while concentrating on her work, Marion heard voices coming from the ventilation shaft. It turned out that next door was a psychological clinic, and by some twist of fate, Marion began to eavesdrop on a patient's confessions to her doctor. The patient, named Hope (Mia Farrow), through her confessions, plunged Marion into deep contemplation. In everyone's eyes, Marion is a successful woman with a flourishing career and a happy marriage, but what emotions and thoughts are suppressed in her heart, only she knows. Hope's painful confessions prompt her to examine her own desires, while a reunion with an old friend makes Marion increasingly aware that her seemingly abundant life is riddled with cracks. Should she continue down the wrong path or start anew? Standing at the crossroads of her life at fifty, the bewildered Marion does not know how to choose.
