University professor Humbert Humbert (played by Jeremy Irons) has a special affection for underage girls after experiencing the pain of losing his first love as a child. One day, he travels to America and becomes a tenant of the widow Charlotte (played by Melanie Griffith). Upon seeing Charlotte's 14-year-old daughter, Lolita (played by Dominique Swain), he falls madly in love with the beautiful girl. In fact, Charlotte hopes to marry Humbert so that she and her daughter can have someone to rely on. To stay close to Lolita, Humbert marries Charlotte. Soon, Charlotte discovers her husband's obsession with her daughter and, in a fit of anger, leaves him, only to die in an accident. Humbert then brings Lolita, who is at summer camp, to live with him, keeping the news of her mother's death a secret, and they embark on an illicit affair. Despite his endless compliance for the young seductress Lolita, Humbert eventually finds that she grows tired of him and plots her escape…
