Wei Jie is an obscure poet whose poetry collection is not published by any publisher, and his works are discarded like trash. Even his brother sells his poems as scrap paper for money. Not wanting to be looked down upon any longer, he chooses to live on the streets, where he meets a prostitute named Gula Bao who appreciates his work. An incident leads everyone to believe he is dead... Time magazine selected it as one of the top 100 films in the world, marking an important representative work of Dutt's turning point. The prostitute tempts the fallen poet aboard her Desire train, only to discover his talent, and they resonate with each other. The poet is mistakenly reported dead, and his works suddenly become popular, drawing everyone to seek their share, even causing estrangement from his family. Dutt creates a chaotic portrayal of the decay of the times, which is very shocking; despite the unconventional themes (intensely avant-garde close-ups), it resonates with contemporary issues and becomes very popular. Dutt no longer resorts to commercial comedy, successfully pursuing an artistic route. The poet encounters an old lover in an elevator, leading to a musical number spanning three time frames, which has become a classic scene in Indian cinema.
