In the 1990s in Sierra Leone, the continuous warfare ravaged the land, and the illegal diamond trade became rampant. Archer (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) is a typical war profiteer who survives by trading diamonds from war zones. He inadvertently learns in prison that a fisherman named Solomon possesses a rare pink diamond. Realizing this is his chance to leave Africa, he seeks out Solomon after his release to help him find the diamond and escape the continent. Solomon is an ordinary fisherman who is separated from his family due to the civil war and is forced by rebel forces to mine diamonds. He discovers a rare pink diamond and hides it. As the war escalates, Solomon ends up in prison but is rescued by Archer. With the help of war correspondent Maddy Bowen (played by Jennifer Connelly), he finds his missing family. However, his son Dia has been taken by the rebels, leaving his fate unknown. In his anger and heartbreak, Solomon agrees to team up with Archer to search for the diamond and find his son within the rebel-controlled areas. Two completely different individuals are brought together by a blood diamond, intertwining their destinies.
