Young Catherine (Gwyneth Paltrow) is going through a challenging time in her life as she balances work with caring for her ailing father, Robert (Anthony Hopkins). Although Robert is a renowned mathematician, he is unable to care for himself in his later years due to illness. Robert passes away, and Catherine is heartbroken, shutting herself off from the world. Meanwhile, Robert's student Hal (Jake Gyllenhaal) plans to seek out the mathematical notes left behind by his professor, which angers Catherine immensely. Catherine's sister Claire (Hope Davis) hopes that her sister will sell their father's house and move to New York with her, as she believes Catherine may have inherited some of their father's health problems and wants to care for her. Catherine has no desire to leave, and her relationship with Hal becomes complicated. Hal uses the key given to him by Catherine to open Robert's drawer, where he discovers a mathematical manuscript. Overjoyed, he proposes publishing the material in Robert's name, but who actually wrote it leaves both Hal and Claire shocked.
