In 1898, silver miner Daniel Plainview (played by Daniel Day Lewis) breaks his leg in an accident underground, but he fortuitously learns of secret oil information. He deceives the townsfolk into gaining oil land with the help of his adopted son HW (played by Dillon Freasier), and rises to great wealth. However, as he becomes a petroleum tycoon, he is not happy. In an unfortunate accident, H.W. becomes deaf, and his resentment towards Daniel grows day by day. The only brother he claims to recognize turns out to be a fraud. Preacher Eli Sunday is nothing more than a small man who uses religion to manipulate others. In a mining accident, one of Daniel’s workers tragically dies. Just as he hopes for Eli (played by Paul Dano) to lend a hand, Eli humiliates him, leading to an ongoing battle between the two...
