Venezuelan star Édgar Ramírez plays the famous Panamanian boxer Roberto Durán in the film, while Robert De Niro portrays his trainer, the equally well-known Ray Arcel. In the 1970s, Durán was one of the most fearsome figures in boxing. His wild eyes, black hair, and fierce fighting style made him a terrifying opponent in lightweight competitions. From 1972 to 1979, Durán was unstoppable in the boxing ring, winning titles in at least three different weight classes. He is the only boxer in the world who fought across five different decades. Durán retired in 2002 at the age of 51. The film revolves around Durán's legendary fight against another famous boxer, Sugar Ray Leonard. On November 25, 1980, the two fighters met for the second time in Louisiana, seven months after their first match, where Durán narrowly defeated Leonard despite the close nature of the fight, with ringside judges unanimously declaring Durán the winner. In the second confrontation, the outcome could have been quite different, but in the eighth round, Durán told the referee to "stop," awarding the victory to Leonard. From then on, Durán became the most unpopular boxer at home and spent many years trying to rebuild his reputation.
