British journalist George Hogg (played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers) infiltrates Nanjing, intending to expose the atrocities committed by the Japanese army in the area. However, he is discovered by the Japanese and, just as he is about to be executed, he is rescued by a Chinese guerrilla fighter, Chen Hansheng (played by Chow Yun-fat). Hogg also meets foreign doctor Li (played by Radha Mitchell). He eventually makes his way to Huangshi, where he lives with over 60 orphans. The children, having suffered greatly from the ravages of war, are initially hostile towards foreigners and even disrespectful. Yet, as time passes, Hogg's enthusiasm and kindness begin to touch the children, and within just a few months, their lives and surroundings see significant improvement, thanks in part to the help of the kind-hearted Mrs. Wang (played by Michelle Yeoh). As life begins to stabilize, the war approaches closer. Hogg, Hansheng, and Li decide to take the children to Shandan, a remote area. The hardships of the journey and the death of companions cannot deter their steps. However, an illness ultimately strikes Hogg, Li, and the children…
