The film is adapted from the six-act play by the great Spanish poet Federico García Lorca, who was brutally murdered by Franco's government for supporting the republican side during the civil war; his works were banned for a long time during the rule of the rebels. The story unfolds in the form of a flamenco dance/documentary, narrating a bloody tragedy through the preparation and rehearsal of the actors: on the wedding night, the groom's mother is troubled. She accidentally discovers that the bride is the daughter of her husband's murderer, and a sense of foreboding arises within her. The bride's cousin, Leonardo (played by Antonio Gades), is deeply in love with his cousin and, in the ensuing chaos, elopes with her. Upon learning this, the groom chases after them with a knife, leading to a bloody duel between the two men… Spanish director: Carlos Saura, part of the flamenco trilogy, along with "Carmen" and "The Love Witch."
