"Before the Revolution," filmed in his hometown of Parma, marks Bernardo Bertolucci's first work to incorporate political consciousness beyond the exploration of human nature. The film depicts a hesitant middle-class youth navigating the conflict between ideals and reality. He wants to discuss revolution and relationships, but when he falls in love with his aunt, he feels guilt and turmoil over this affection. Ultimately, he succumbs to reality and marries a girl he doesn’t particularly like. While the film is not Bertolucci's personal autobiography, it encapsulates the atmosphere of the 1960s, with a youthful and fiery Bertolucci evident in the film.
