In the winter of 1969, on the banks of the thin and cold Yellow River. Zhao Da, a poor farmer, was 30 years old and still unmarried. Before his mother passed away, she entrusted him to his clan uncle, Zhao Tiantang. The girl from the neighboring village, Gou Dan, was in a relationship with Zhao Da; she came from a poor background, and her mother was seriously ill with no money for treatment. Out of kindness, Zhao Da sold his own sheep to support them. Unexpectedly, the armed minister of the commune, Mi Laichang, intervened brutally and took Gou Dan away. At a struggle session, Gou Dan was subjected to humiliation, and Zhao Da stood up to cause a disturbance at the meeting, resulting in him being beaten brutally. Feeling lost and hopeless, Gou Dan jumped into the raging Yellow River. After her death, Zhao Da's friend, Shuangxi, sought a match for him but to no avail. To fulfill his mother's dying wish, Zhao Da, in a fit of anger, took down the "marriage notice for the deceased." Mi Laichang rebuked him harshly, and in a fit of rage, Zhao Da braved the wind and snow to bury the girl's remains in the family grave and tearfully left his hometown. Time passed, and seasons changed. Zhao Da returned to his hometown following in the footsteps of spring. The neighbor girl, Qingqing, was young and beautiful, bold and lively, but due to a forced marriage, she was wed to a man over ten years older than her. Zhao Da sympathized with her misfortune, and Qingqing fell in love with him deep down. During a market day, Zhao Da discovered someone had quietly slipped a new pair of cloth shoes into his backpack, especially the note urging him to shake off his troubles and embrace a new life, which nourished his barren heart. He first thought of Qingqing, but the shoes were not from her, leaving Zhao Da confused. Mi Laichang felt guilty for persecuting Zhao Da all those years ago and causing Gou Dan's death; he visited several times to apologize and offered to be a matchmaker for Zhao Da, stirring up immense pain in Zhao Da. Shuangxi also introduced Zhao Da to a rural teacher, Shen Yulan. Just as they were about to confirm their engagement, Zhao Da discovered that Yulan was actually the widow of his "deceased wife," which surprised him greatly. The clan elders firmly opposed this, and Yulan's mother-in-law vehemently obstructed it. Yet, Yulan revealed that the pair of cloth shoes and the note were gifts from her, leaving Zhao Da in a dilemma. After the news spread, the deeply pained Qingqing presented Zhao Da with a pair of cloth shoes she had made with her own hands by the Yellow River and knelt before him, unable to rise. For a moment, Zhao Da's marriage prospects stirred up turbulence once again...
