Maria (Julie Andrews) is a young and lively nun who enjoys singing loudly in nature, often forgetting the rules of the convent. The abbess believes that Maria does not belong in a strictly governed convent. After consulting with several nuns, the abbess decides to send Maria to be a governess for a man named Captain von Trapp (Christopher Plummer). The captain's wife has been deceased for many years, leaving behind seven children, and he insists on strict discipline for them. He tells Maria that previous governesses did not last long due to the children's mischief. Indeed, Maria encounters mischief, but this kind teacher does not tell their father; instead, she cares for the children like a mother and soon bonds with them. The captain gradually changes his attitude towards the children under Maria's guidance. Feelings develop between the captain and Maria, and after they marry, they return to Austria, now occupied by the Nazis. The captain does not want to work for the Nazis, and the family prepares to escape...
