General Macbeth (played by Michael Fassbender) is the cousin of King Duncan of Scotland (played by David Thewlis). He has distinguished himself on the battlefield, defending against external enemies and quelling rebellions. One day, on his way home, he encounters three witches who prophesy that Macbeth will rise in rank and power, igniting his ambition. However, it is the son of General Banquo (played by Paddy Considine) who is destined to inherit the throne. Under the encouragement of his wife (played by Marion Cotillard), Macbeth murders the king and ascends the throne. To keep his position and the secret of the regicide, Macbeth's hands are stained with blood, as Banquo, Lady Macduff (played by Elizabeth Debicki), and her children all fall victim to his ruthless actions. Macbeth descends further into madness.
