Justin (played by Jennifer Aniston) and Phil (played by John C. Reilly) are a married couple who have been together for many years, but their relationship has long been merely a formality. Phil is addicted to drugs and alcohol and spends his days with his irresponsible friend Buddy (played by Tim Blake Nelson). The side effects of drug use have left Phil infertile, cruelly robbing Justin of her desire to become a mother. A young boy named Holden (played by Jake Gyllenhaal) captures Justin's attention with his unconventional lifestyle, which fascinates her deeply. Over time, their relationship eventually transcends mere friendship. Buddy discovers the affair between Justin and Holden and begins a long extortion of Justin. Worse still, at this critical moment, Justin finds out she is pregnant.
