After finishing "Let's Go Happily," three years have passed, yet the Japanese enthusiasm for gangster love films remains unabated. Ozu approaches this genre again, with a mentality and techniques different from before. The characters' emotions become more complex and tragic, and every scene and element is meticulously arranged. Continuing from the previous characters, it tells the tale of a gangster boss and his entanglements with two women—one good and one bad. However, this time, the gangster and the bad woman also attract the good woman, and in the end, the gangster does not abandon the bad woman. Perhaps to enhance the plot's persuasiveness, Ozu cast Tanaka Kinuyo as the female lead, and the bad girl's character is indeed subtly evil, at times appearing pitiful. Unfortunately, Kinuyo had just starred in the beloved "Izu Dancer," so the bad woman image did not resonate with audiences at that time. Ozu masterfully captures the gangster film genre, and many consider this to be his silent film pinnacle. (27th Hong Kong International Film Festival)
